Goal of the lecture is to convey the fundamentals for understanding of communication systems with mobile subscribers. The GSM standard is taken as realization example. The topics include the components of the radio transmission link like time-variant radio channel and the corresponding stochastic models, modulation and demodulation for digital transmission, channel equalization (maximum likelihood sequence estimation, Viterbi-algorithm), channel coding and decoding (convolutional codes).

Furthermore the fundamental diversity principles multiple access methods and interference effects in mobile radio systems will be treated.

The cellular concept and the methods to analyze the radio coverage and frequency efficiency of a cellular system will be presented. Taking GSM as an example further system aspects like handover, power-control, slow frequency hopping, time synchronization and the network topology are considered.
