Energy Harvesting Wireless Communications

Seminar “Special Topics in Communication”
Winter Term 2014/15

As the number of users and applications of wireless communication has been experiencing a vast increase in the last few years, the energy consumption of wireless networks has become an issue of vital importance. In this regard, the concept of energy harvesting appears as a promising solution to power wireless communication with alternative - environmentally friendly - sources of energy. Examples of such sources of energy are solar, wind, piezoelectric, ambient radio power, etc. However, the paradigm shift requires a redesign of wireless networks, where the energy is not considered as an unlimited resource, as in the past, but as a limited resource which affects the operation of wireless communication networks. In a similar context, for certain low-power applications the remote terminals can be powered via ambient radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting. For such applications, the concept of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has drawn much interest. SWIPT refers to schemes where information and power are transmitted by an access point to a set of client terminals, and appears as an efficient solution for communication systems where the physical replacement of client batteries is either costly or infeasible.

Participants in this seminar will acquire knowledge about the potentials and challenges of energy harvesting and SWIPT systems. Topics to be covered include:

  • Comparative survey on energy harvesting sources and their application to wireless communication
  • Transmission policies for energy harvesting wireless communication systems
  • Wireless communication with hybrid energy source
  • Energy harvesting communication with smart grid applications
  • Wireless Power Transfer: Near field coupling vs. far field RF power transfer
  • SWIPT: Receiver architecture design and rate-energy tradeoff
  • Multi-user scheduling in RF wireless powered communication networks 
  • SWIPT beamforming designs for secure RF wireless powered communication networks
  • SWIPT beamforming designs in multi-antenna RF wireless powered communication networks
  • Cooperative relaying in RF wireless powered communication networks: Performance analysis and protocol design
  • Relay-assisted SWIPT
  • RF Wireless powered cognitive radio networks
  • Circuit design, implementation, and applications of RF energy harvesting receivers

Taking part in the course requires basic knowledge in Communication Systems which can be acquired in the lectures Digital Communications and Fundamentals of Mobile Communications.
