Equalization and Adaptive Systems for Digital Communications

Prerequisites / Organisational Information:
The course is aimed primarily at students in higher semesters. Knowledge of lectures system theory and digital signal processing, as well as either the lecture or message transmission Digital transmission, are helpful for participation.


For digital transmission with high data rates, channel distortions have to be taken into account in order to guarantee a high reliability. Hence, sophisticated equalization algorithms are employed inmany applications. This holds for transmission over copper lines as well as wireless communications. E.g., in the xDSL system family (Digital Subscriber Lines) which enables a fast digitaltransmission over subscriber lines (from the central office to the customers), decision-feedback equalization or precoding techniques are frequently employed. On the other hand, in mobilecommunication systems according to the standards GSM and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) maximum-likelihood sequence estimation and reduced-state sequence estimation,respectively, are used. For an optimum adjustment of the equalizer parameters to the channel, adaptation algorithms are required which are also covered in this course.

The aim of the course is a detailed presentation of the most familiar equalization and adaptation algorithms which enables the participants to select appropriate strategies for practical applications.
