Seminar Ausgewählte Kapitel der Nachrichtentechnik

5G Key Technologies

Basic Information: The demand for new services in wireless communication systems is rapidly growing. Connecting to high speed internet, uploading data, and streaming high quality videos are expected to be possible everywhere via small and low battery mobile devices. At the same time, the number of smart-phone users is drastically increasing. This vast growth in both the number of users and data demand requires a revolutionary upgrade of the current cellular networks.

5G is the next generation of wireless communication systems and is expected to significantly improve the current cellular system addressing the aforementioned demand. The set of requirements for 5G networks includes

1-10 Gbit/sec data rate for users,
1 msec latency, and
10-100 times number of connected devices.

These requirements cannot be achieved by optimizing the current wireless networks but require a paradigm shift in wireless communications. The latter conclusion has led to the proposal of several new wireless technologies in the recent years.

Our Seminar: In this seminar, we intend to address the proposed 5G key technologies including

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)
Millimeter wave (mmWave)
Small cells
Cloud random access network (C-RAN)
Full-duplex communication
Filter bank multi carrier multiplexing
Cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access
Physical layer security
Device-to-device communication
Internet of things (IoT)
Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA)
Sparse code multiple access (SCMA)

Main benefit of the seminar: The students who participate in this seminar acquire knowledge about the main challenges and key technologies in the next generation of wireless communications.

Prerequisites: Registering for the seminar requires knowledge of topics that are covered in the following lectures

Digital Communications
Fundamentals of Mobile Communications
